Week #27: A rough go for some crops this year

Last week we had a heat wave, and though this week wasn't as hot, we are seeing some of the detrimental affects it is having in our greenhouse.

A lot of our peppers, and so far one of our pickling cukes have wilted to the point they are not coming back. The pickling cuke has weak brown roots and the base of the plant is yellowing which is a sign of Pythium and it wouldn't surprise us if the peppers have the same symptoms.

We are looking into getting a shade screen to put over the greenhouse for next year to help control the heat in the greenhouse.

Something is also killing some of our raspberry canes and our harvest this year is basically zero.

We pulled our garlic this week and it to doesn't look quite the ticket. It died back earlier than expected and most bulbs are quite small. Some of the bulbs turned to mush in the ground before we could pull them.

Of course not all is doom and gloom.  So far we can always rely on zucchini, and we've just begun to harvest some in both yellow and green varieties.

Although both yellow zucchini and green zucchini are great to eat, the yellow variety has fewer leaves making the fruit easier to find.  Photo by Marianne Balkwill
