Week #9: March in like a LION

On March 1st we had one more dump of snow, and though we didn't get the accumulation, the sideways blowing snow was the worst we have seen it this winter!

Late afternoon on March 1st.  Luckily by March 3rd it was almost all gone.

Before the snow we had a couple of mild days and we checked out our two bee hives. Marianne saw a single bee returning to her hive after going out for a short flight. After sunset, we got on our head lamps and cracked open Aaron's hive. As soon as we heard and saw bees, we quickly closed the top lid and ran away.  In conclusion, some of our bees did survive the winter!  Most likely they will be spending their days feeding on the honey in their hives as there are no natural food sources around right now. We attached two sugar water feeders to the hives at the entryway, in hopes that they will use them.

This week we also ordered our chicks.  We are going to get fewer chicks this year with 11 hens and 1 rooster. They are scheduled to arrive on April 17th.  We still have 11 left from last year that enjoy every minute they can get out in the sun when the snow melts.
