Week #39: Back from Vacation

After coming home from 2 weeks of camping in Quetico Provincial Park (hence no blog posts for week 37 and 38) we had some things to catch up on.

While we were away, Marianne's Mom harvested the dry beans and placed them in the greenhouse.  Probably get to those in the next couple of months. Our cabbage was also picked and are in the freezer.  We gave Marianne's Mom some as well as she always brings it back in a jar of coleslaw!

We are still getting some tomatoes including the odd beef and cherries which we are happy to say never got late blight this year, which is a first!

Marianne trimmed and harvested some more brussel sprouts which went into the freezer.  We still have a lot of kale left which will last us into November if it doesn't freeze.

Started cleaning up some gardens this week including pulling out all the sweetcorn, cabbage, and broccoli.

Our chickens also started to lay their first eggs while we were away.  Only 2 per day right now.  Our chickens are still doing quite well. So far we only lost 2 this year, not to dogs but to our cat Momma White who killed 2 to bring up to our deck for the kittens a while back. We now make sure we close the coop every night.

Here is what our one little yellow chick turned into.  We thought it was supposed to be our rooster but ended up being a hen of a totally different breed!  Not sure what breed or hybrid this chicken is.  Photo by Marianne Balkwill
