Week #4: January Thaw

We had a fairly warm week for the most part and the weekend was the warmest with temperatures up to 9 Celsius.  We actually let the chickens out into the yard now that the snow has melted, though the warm up will be short lived.

Going out into the yard on Sunday when it was sunny and 6 Celsius we could actually smell the mushroom compost we placed on the gardens back in November.  Some Horned Larks were also singing on territory in the open field behind our property, while a few were migrating north, a sign of spring that goes unnoticed by pretty much everyone.

Aaron took advantage of the nicer weather and trimmed a few fruit trees, along with some spruce branches that were beginning to crowd our back deck.

Pruning the fruit trees.  In the background you can see our blue and yellow bees hives.  Aaron checked the hives on one of the warmer days by lightly tapping the sides. We are happy to announce that some survived the sub zero temperatures we had in the new year.
