Spring Time on the Mini Farm

It's early April and things are starting to get into full swing here!

Back in early March we finally got the rest of the south fence line cleaned up!  So happy that chore is now over!

Outside we laid a foundation and built stands for our beehives. They are going to be in a protected sunny area.

Our signs are up in our tiny orchard.  We also did signs for the strawberries, raspberries and brambles. Aaron also sprayed the fruit trees with horticultural oil this weekend.

The feeling that spring is now here to stay has been around for a while now.  Our resident Common Grackles returned at the end of February, as did the Robins and Killdeer.  On April 8th, we noticed that our resident Vesper Sparrows returned to the neighbouring field.  Another sure sign of spring here at home are kittens!!

We originally had 5, but we think Momma White got rid of one.  Currently there are 4 and they are really cute.  Momma White seems to be a really good Mother so far!  This is her 3rd litter.  Her first litter was lost (we never did find the kittens), and her second litter, as far as we know, were 2 kittens (Murphey and Miya).

Momma White....The Boss!

On April 8th we finally got around to preparing our chickens for the freezer.  Marianne's Mom came over at 8:30 am, and by 3:00pm the last chicken was in a ziplock bag.  We get our next chicks (plus 1 rooster) on May 2nd. We are going with the Rhode Island Red x Columbians again.

This week Aaron is hoping to rototill the gardens.  We are planning to plant our radishes this week, followed by peas, and then potatoes.  From this point on every weekend will be dedicated to working outdoors at some point....even if it's just to play with the kittens!
